| MORE THAN LOVE Friends don’t just like each other, they love each other at least the true ones do. However, among church members today, a slightly different picture is rapidly taking shape. It’s emerging that lust is actually dominating love among many Christians today, and this phenomenon is not limited to any age group, but it’s most prevalent among the youth. While it’s true that some friendly relations between men and women, boys and girls still exit without any foreboding desires from either party, lust is becoming a common motive behind cordial associations.Stories of priests in the middle of sex scandals no longer raise brows, church ministries taking advantage of the womenfolk in the congregation has ceased to make news. Many girls and boys today do not look for friends, they hunt for sleeping partners. Love between sexes has ceased to mean much if it lacks sexual fulfillment, even in marriages! And you see that’s the sad thing about lust, it overshadows love if you let it crawl into your life, you stop seeing people as wonderful beings but as objects for the satisfaction of private wants. If this grave scenario was found in the world alone, all we’d have to do would be pray for them to change, or may be carry a message of reform to them. But what happens when the world is in the church? We need to think seriously about our relationship with opposite sexes. Do we keep the associations holy and honest as they should be or do we continue with them in their wicked versions? If we choose the latter, may be we should ask ourselves whether that’s exactly important. Let me be clear about something here, I am obliviously not talking about a husband and his wife but about a husband and another man’s wife. I am not referring to a friendship between a choirmaster and a new female recruit in the choir, but a fishy relationship between the same. Relationships that are either adulterous or lead to adultery; fornication in the case of younger brothers and sisters. Lust has become such a strong emotion in us because we’ve turned our backs to the light. Righteousness and holiness are just words without life.Illegitimate relationships are more costly than beneficial on the overall. They shift our focus from serious elements in our individual lives like academics, success in business, happy marriages etc and we come out of them frustrated and miles behind in race of life. They cause us unnecessary embarrassment when they are revealed, because no evil is permanently kept secret. Even if not for the sake of holiness, let’s do away with the trash of lust relationships. The pleasure does not last long after the illicit encounter anyway, but the stigma that goes with it, hangs around you for the rest of your life. I am a youth myself and I have got friends and I see every day what a waste of valuable time wicked friendship between boys and girls cause, and what a wonderful thing honesty and true friendship between the sexes are. My conclusion is that our future on this planet and in the eternal should not be forfeited for a quickly passing sensation. Think of this too, because of lust, spouses cheat on each other, pregnancies are aborted which is ideally killing an unborn child, the society looks down on you once you are branded immoral and ultimately you run away from God if you are too ashamed to even think of repentance which is a common scenario. You don’t need lust if is that costly, do you? Pray to God to wash it down and make a genuine effort to leave it and you will get yourself a shot at good life. Have a good week.
